You win the game when either your opponent is reduced to 2 pieces (and therefore cannot make any mills) or you have positioned your pieces such that your opponent has no available move. This is sometimes referred to as ‘flying’. In some variations there is a rule stating that, when you have been reduced to 3 pieces, you are no longer restricted to moving one of your pieces to a vacant adjacent spot and may move your piece to any vacant spot on the board. You may not remove an opponent’s piece that is currently part of a mill, unless there are no other pieces available. If, in moving your piece, you create a mill (see above) you again remove any one of your opponents pieces from the board.

You are not allowed to jump pieces, nor may you jump to a non-adjacent spot. Each player now takes turns moving any one of their pieces to an adjacent empty spot. When all pieces have been placed, phase 2 begins. A mill can only be created along one of the illustrated lines – never diagonally. If, at any time, a player places a piece such that it creates a line of 3 of his own colour (this is called a ‘mill’), he removes one of his opponents pieces from the board and that piece plays no further part in the game. Play alternates until both players have placed all their pieces on the board. You will notice that each spot is formed by the intersection of 2, 3 or 4 lines.
